About Belly Dancing

"Rakkase" means female belly dancer in Turkish (Rakkas is the male dancer - yes, there is such a thing). I felt that being Turkish and being passionate about belly dancing, I could not find a better name for my website. I think "dance" is the mother of all languages. We are many nationalities, speaking many different languages in my classes, but we all speak and share the passion of one language together; "Belly Dance"!

Life is a dance!  Dance is a celebration of breathing, eating, drinking and loving. We were all born into a dancing world. Remember and take your time to enjoy it!

"It is hard to find another form of exercise that does such wonders for your physically fitness, inspires you emotionally, fuels your femininity and positive body image!"

Read the "comments from students".

Dance is accepted all over the world as the most ancient form of art. Plato wrote that "man should live as he danced; he should play games, sing and dance. By doing so, he will appeal to the Gods and defend himself against his enemies."

Belly dancing naturally suits a woman's bone and muscle structure, with movements radiating from the torso. Belly dancing is generally performed barefoot, though most dancers in Turkey prefer elegant high-heeled shoes.

Turkey is the gateway to the Orient, and has always inspired and nurtured oriental fantasies. Salome, who danced the "Seven Veils" to commemorate John the Baptist, became the embodiment of this art. Oriental belly dancing, long a symbol of the East, has always symbolised the magical attraction of Eastern women and aroused interest in the Western world. Westerners brought oriental dance to Europe from the mid-19th century. Turkish belly dancers spread their traditional dance around the wider world, and enchanted their audiences when they appeared on dance stages in countries from America to Argentina; from the Arabian Peninsula to England and from Japan to Italy.

Turkish music pulsates with powerful rhythms that inspire the dancer to exploit the full flexibility of her body, and to show off all the intricate movements of her art. Oriental dance music is the kind of music which fills up and conquers the body, making it long to dance.

Turkish men and women come to life and show their love of dance as soon as they hear this traditional music flow from the instruments. As soon as the music fills their ears, the nerves of their bodies begin to twitch, compelling them to follow the brisk, colorful and rhythmic music. (Source: Oriental Belly Dance by Kemal Ozdemir)

I am passionate about belly dancing. In fact, I think I was born dancing. I made this page to share it with everyone who shares the same passion! I hope you will enjoy it. Any questions or any comments, please do contact me.
